Shockwave Therapy – What Is It?

What Is It?

Shockwave therapy is a type of non-surgical treatment used to help recover acute or chronic pain. Used in orthopedics, physiotherapy, sports medicine, urology and veterinary medicine.

How Does It Work?

This type of treatment uses a device that produces a series of low energy acoustic waves to applies it to the injured parts of the body. The energy promotes regeneration to bones and tendons. It also enhances blood circulation to regenerate damaged tissue.

During this process, the therapist would

  • Firstly locate the area that is to treat by using palpation.
  • Secondly, apply a gel to the area
  • Lastly, use the Shockwave applicator
This device uses energy waves to come in contact with the damaged tissue. As a result, the body increases blood flow to that certain area. A reparative cycle occurs because of this and leads to new healthy tissue in the area.

Pros About This Process

The advantage of this treatment is that it is non-invasive and does not require any anesthesia or drugs. There are also very little side effects, no scaring or risk of infections.

Patients usually experience immediate pain relief after the treatment. However, there may be some soreness in the areas treated within 2-4 hours after treatment.

There are also reports that show that shockwave therapy has 90% success rates.

Other

The number of treatments varies depending on the tissue response. Typically patients would require 3-5 treatments. However, it is very often that patients experience relief right after the first treatment.

It is also recommended that patients refrain from physical activity. Especially ones that involve the treated area of the body, for about 48 hours after each treatment session.
